The Write It Out series serves as an opportunity for us all to explore our creative writing in a supportive environment. Each month I will share a prompt along with my writing inspired by it, then invite you to participate. For this month, write about your favorite Spring activity.
It’s warm and I’m sneezing
thirteen, fourteen, fifteen
in a row.
My pack is too small for me,
but at least it’s light.
“Just a quick trip,” we said.
“Not too arduous.”
Eight and a half miles today,
I love the smell of my sweat.
I love that I haven’t shaved in weeks.
I love how covered in dust I’ll be
at the end of these two quick days.
We’ll find our water in the streams around us,
whatever is left from this terrible drought.
We’ll use our cellphones
to take photos of the wildflowers
instead of checking email.
We’ll choose a spot to pitch our tent
and sleep with the stones and grass.
We’ll wake up and make instant coffee
because that’s excusable when you camp.
Twenty sneezes in
while the flowers and dust promise more.
I love backpacking in the Spring.
I am very curious to read about your favorite Spring activity and remember, you don’t have to write a poem. You can write anything you want: a short story, a long poem, free prose, etc. If you do write something, make sure you link up. See the details below:
- write from this month’s prompt and post on your blog
- submit your post below where it says “click here to enter”
- encourage your readers to take part, too!
