The Write It Out series is a monthly creative writing challenge which serves as an opportunity for bloggers to explore their creative writing in a supportive environment. Each month I will share a prompt along with my writing inspired by it, then invite you to participate. For this month, write about a favorite summer night from your childhood.
The water will be warm.
The blue bubble wrap has been heating it all day
first from the surface, then to three feet below, and finally
ten feet to the pebbles.
Should I dive from the board? The side?
Or that ledge over the bench where the water falls
right out from under my toes?
I will dive from the ledge.
First breathe in, then plug my nose with my mind.
Now throw my hands up over my head as high as they can reach
This is the best part: right before.
My body is cool from the night and the water is warm from the day.
I like to imagine it first, with my hands in the air.
I imagine it while I lower my head.
I imagine while I bend my knees together.
Then nothing as I jump- fly- bow.
I love turning onto my back underneath the water
to let the whole pool sit on top of me.
It makes me feel strong and happy.
I can see my siblings splash in, shadows above me.
I was wrong before… this is the best part.
We each have our part in this kidney bean lagoon.
