The One Word Inspiration series is a guest post series on Clear the Way which asks different visiting bloggers to share whatever they are inspired to share when they hear only one word. The word changes each month and today Becca from Ladyface Blog is here to share her inspiration from the word opening.
Hi everyone! My name is Becca and I’m a blogger over at Ladyface Blog! I work as an Administrative Coordinator for a non-profit in Seattle, but when I’m not working I love to cook, craft, hang out with my ridiculous cats, and spend time out in the lovely city of Seattle.
When Kate asked me to participate in her One Word Inspiration series with the word “Opening,” I was excited to write something up. As someone with a fierce independent streak, who has spent many years dealing with being shy and battling anxiety, when I think of the word opening, I think about opening up, which to be perfectly honest, can be really hard and really scary for me to do.
Opening yourself up means really putting yourself out there and making yourself vulnerable. You’re opening yourself up to criticism, disappointment, and a whole other world of scary stuff. So it’s hard. Sometimes it feels like it would be easier to just stay closed off, live within your current means, and just call it a day.
But here’s the thing. When you keep yourself closed off, when you never try anything new, you’re not opening yourself up to the world of opportunity that exists in the world!
As someone who used to be very shy, opening up has meant learning how to come out of my shell. I used to be so nervous about social interactions that I would barely dream of asking someone to do something because I was so afraid they would turn me down. As I’ve opened myself up, I’ve gained a lot of confidence and learned to reach out to other people. Opening myself and doing that was really hard at first, but with practice it’s become easy and I’ve gained an amazing group of friends that I’m so happy to have in my life.
Opening up can also be about opening yourself up to new opportunities. I recently made the decision to apply for a new job. And boy, let me tell you, after working at the same company for 5 years, it was scary! I had to update my resume, write cover letters, go on interviews, and really, open myself up to scrutiny. It was a scary prospect, for sure, but as a result, I got offered an amazing position that really can challenge me and help me grow. If I hadn’t opened myself up to this opportunity it may have passed me by.
When you open up, there’s potential for some crummy stuff, but even more than that, there’s potential for amazing, wonderful things to come into your life. Embrace who you are and share it with the world. You’ll find that opening up can make you feel free, loved, brave, and happy.
So, I want to encourage you to try opening yourself up to something new today. You might be surprised how much positive change it could bring to your life!
