I thought it would be fun to share my past hairstyles up until this point. Above are consecutive photos taken of me over the past many years, occasionally looking like a very different person. For reference, my natural hair color is red-toned brown and highlights quite a bit when exposed to sunshine.
I wore my hair both long and short as a child and I tried going somewhat bang-less in my late teens (as you can see in the first row). I then began experimenting with bangs and different cuts (second row) but left the color alone for the most part. After that, I started exploring color (as shown in the third row). I let living in Southern California influence me with blonde highlights, I deviated with a brighter red, then went totally blonde. I’ve always done my own hair (cue the cringes from hairstylists) because I enjoy experimenting with my hair and I don’t trust others to know what I want done, since I sort of figure that out myself as I go.
Every once in awhile I halt the constant cutting and coloring to let my hair grow out naturally. I have this long-standing goal of growing out my hair to my waist. I’ve never reached this goal; in fact, the closest I’ve ever come is shoulder-length. Once my hair reaches this length, the cutting and/or coloring freeze stops and I go at it again. As you can see in row four, my hair reached my shoulders and I celebrated with blue and purple streaks. I loved these colors; I felt like my hair was always having a party. Once the streaks faded and I grew tired of up-keep, I opted for the grungy hipster-cut shmullet. Yes, I wore a she-mullet. I actually kept the mullet for awhile (onto row five) before I went back to my goal of natural waist-length color.
This time when my hair reached my shoulders, my little fingers were itching to pour color onto my strands. I noticed I had an addiction but caved anyways and went grey (row six). I had a lot of fun with my hair at this time of my life (a little over a year ago) and teetered between powder blue, slate grey, and white. Although the silver is my all-time favorite hairstyle I’ve ever had, the up-keep got to me and weakened my hair (darn bleach). So now, as you can see in the last row, I’m on a quest toward waist-length natural hair again. Wish me luck!
