The 12 Lists series is a monthly list-making series I created along with my sister, Gillian from Chez Gillian, for those who love writing lists like I do. Each month we announce the topic, write our lists accordingly, and invite you to do the same on your blog. You are welcome to add your post to the link-up below so we can get to know you a little better, one list at a time. This month’s topic: healthy summer routines.
This past year has been such a whirlwind for me. I threw myself head first into my schoolwork and took on a lot. Now, I am looking at a full three months off for the summer before I start my final semester at San Francisco State. The only plans I have are tentative trips and rekindling things with Clear the Way. While the rest has been so nice, I have found myself getting bored and antsy without the structure I am used to having in my days. Enter: my new summer routine.
Cold lemon water – Cutting back on coffee is a priority for me now, for health reasons. I don’t drink nearly as much as I used to, but even a cup a day has been wearing me down and setting me up for the inevitable afternoon crash. Starting my mornings with a squirt of lemon juice and/or a few slices of lemon in a cold glass of water is just as rejuvenating and much better for my health.
Getting out on the trail – I have really let my fitness slide, and I’m ready to change that. I worked hard on my schoolwork this past year, but that meant I was much more sedentary than ever before. With my open schedule now, I’m getting outside (before it gets hot) to move my body and get some fresh air.
Reading for pleasure – I am lucky in the sense that I love what I study at school, so all my reading for the past year has been pleasurable. But there’s something to say about reading that isn’t assigned… I’ll be lounging around with some new reading material and focusing on physical books. Most of the reading I do for school is on a screen, so I’m looking forward to a summer filled with paper pages.
Yoga and strength training – On top of the cardio and outdoor time I’m adding into my routine, I’ll be increasing my yoga and strength training. I have kept pretty steady with my yoga routine, even during my busy school weeks, but I’d like to spend more time with it over the summer. Instead of rushing through my routine, I’m going to be stretching it out (see what I did there?) and really enjoying the process.
Journaling – I have been keeping my Five Minute Journal and really enjoying it. I take a few minutes in the morning and again at the end of the day and, while it doesn’t take much time, I find that it really helps shape my perspective and narrows my focus. It helps me plan and understand my day in a positive way.
Enjoying San Francisco – A move out of state might be in the books for me and thinking about living somewhere else this time next year is really exciting. I’m ready for a change! At the same time, I’m so happy with my little place in San Francisco and I know I’ll miss the city I love (even though it has been changing so quickly, and not for the better). This summer, I’ll be making plans each week to get out to events and enjoy my favorite parks and restaurants.
Tell me, what are you including in your summer routine?
